The Chicago Center for Systems Biology (CCSB) seeks highly qualified undergraduates for Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Fellowships. Stipends are $4,000 per ten-week summer quarter (June 13- August 19, 2011). They will be awarded on a competitive basis based on academic excellence, motivation, scientific potential, and career goals aligned with the CCSB. Applicants with computational science backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. All participants must be U.S. citizens (or permanent residents) and enrolled in an accredited undergraduate college degree program with a concentration in a field of science.
If selected, students will be matched with a faculty researcher for mentorship. At the conclusion of the project, students will produce a summary report and present their results at a REU Symposium. In the last two years undergraduates from the University of Illinois, Yale University, University of Chicago, and Northwestern University have participated.
CCSB is based at the University of Chicago but includes collaborating investigators at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Research focuses on how networks of genes interact to enable cells and organisms to respond to environmental and genetic changes. Investigators study the robustness of transcriptional networks in physiological, developmental, and evolutionary time scales.
REU participants have access to libraries, athletic facilities, and University-sponsored social and cultural events. Students are invited to attend seminars, take training courses, and participate in workshops.
The deadline for receipt of REU application materials (see attached pdf file; please post) is March 1, 2011. To apply, send via mail or email the filled out application (which can be found here), personal statement, official transcript, and two confidential letters of recommendation to:
